Gas Main Break Evacuates Hunterdon County Buildings, Shuts Down Route 22

A gas main break evacuated Hunterdon County buildings and closed a portion of Route 22 on Tuesday, May 16, authorities and developing reports said.

The gas leak was confirmed by police near Route 22 and Helens Florist in Readington Township, prompting an evacuation in the immediate area shortly before 1 p.m. Initial reports came in just before 12:45 p.m.

Those who live or work within about 350 feet of the leak were asked to leave the area if possible or shelter-in-place, police said:

Meanwhile, Route 22 was shut down in both directions west of CR 523/Oldwick Road in Readingtown Township. All eastbound lanes were closed, while all westbound lanes were open.
